I want to know more: A designer in Paris

A designer in Paris: 3 July 2008

Cities always change with the seasons of the year, but the change that has come over Paris with the arrival of summer is really impressive.

People are taking advantage of the good weather to picnic beside the Seine or slip into their bikinis and, in the absence of a beach, sunbathe in the parks. One of my favourite options is to go to open-air concerts. Two weeks ago the city celebrated "music day" and there were concerts all over Paris. All you had to do was choose a style and head for the neighbourhood where it was being played.

Last weekend there was a Jazz Festival in La Defense, the business area of Paris. On Sunday I went to see Herbie Hancock play. La Defense is an amazing venue for concerts: you find yourself surrounded by skyscrapers and enveloped in a surprising silence, because all the roads run underground. It feels as if you are in another city, because La Defense bears no relation to the architecture of the rest of Paris, where modern buildings have not been permitted to take over from 19th-century housing.
