Birth Of The AlhóndigaBilbao Visual Identity

Thibaut Mathieu, the art director at Cake Design, on learning of the AlhóndigaBilbao project understood the need to create a visual identity that represented a cultural and human meeting point; a mixture of the activities to be held in the space, related to well-being, knowledge and recreation; an image that would distil the essence and spirit of what was to become a new source of energy and exchange in Bilbao.

To do so, he started with a simple premise: a person discovers the city, and through it builds up an image that incorporates the essence of that which AlhóndigaBilbao wishes to portray. First they discover a landscape, its mountains and the sea. Next, a city that is embedded into that landscape, followed by its population and architecture. And lastly, a human being, a person, a citizen of Bilbao…

From the mixture of these four elements arises a framework of images and concepts, which, as a whole, represent the energy and the essence of the city. A symbol in tune with our times, where cultures and images are intermixed and added together to create a richer and more plural whole.

For the logo Thibaut Mathieu started with the simple interjection, the surprised OH! that we express when we discover an extraordinary place, and the project by Philippe Starck. An OH! that, when inverted, is present in the construction of the word Alhóndiga.

A human HO!, that has been borrowed from oral language, and which again refers us back to the main idea: AlhóndigaBilbao, a space built to weave a social and cultural thread between citizens.
